Should, Would, Could
What would you do if you weren’t spending all your time on what you believe you should be doing?
What are your “shoulds” and where do they come from?
At the most basic level, “shoulds” originate from the rules and expectations handed down by parents, so each generation doesn’t have to rediscover that going to the river at dusk is a good way to get eaten by an alligator or that this plant makes you strong while another makes you sick.
Getting eaten or consuming the wrong plant is now much less of a threat, but the influence of cultural rules and norms persists. They have evolved into ways of thinking that are perceived as absolute. My way is right; your way is wrong.
This dictates how to dress, who and how to worship, whom to marry, how to act, what constitutes success, and so much more.
Some of these rules may still benefit us, but many do not, and those that don’t cause unnecessary harm to others and ourselves. Identifying the “shoulds” that shape our lives is complex but essential for accessing what you can and want to do.
Separating the “shoulds” that serve you from those that don’t and clarifying what you want and are capable of is easier in conversation.
